Thursday April 23 Virtual Field Trip
We continue our exploration of interesting living organisms on planet earth. This time lapse video shows the movement and growth of plants. You will look at a plant differently after watching this!
Plants on the forest floor are too far away from the essential light source 50 meters up in the canopy, but they needn't be passive. If the light won't come to them, they can go to the light; they need to climb.

Wednesday April 22 Virtual Field Trip
Today is Earth Day! Our virtual field trip is a "visit" with Jane Goodall. Click the link to see a brief video about Jane and then explore her website to learn so much more about her work.
Equipped with little more than a notebook, binoculars, and her fascination with wildlife, Jane Goodall braved a realm of unknowns to give the world a remarkable window into humankind’s closest living relatives. Through nearly 60 years of groundbreaking work, Dr. Jane Goodall has not only shown us the urgent need to protect chimpanzees from extinction; she has also redefined species conservation to include the needs of local people and the environment. Today she travels the world, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees and environmental crises, urging each of us to take action on behalf of all living things and planet we share.

Tuesday April 21 Virtual Field Trip
Today we continue our theme of nature as part of celebrating Earth Day this week. Let's visit with a little mammal called a sengi. For maximum efficiency, the sengi creates an intricate network of pathways through the undergrowth that enable it to reach prey more easily. The sengi carries a mental map of these pathways, and should trouble appear, its speed and intimate knowledge of escape routes help it win the day.
I'm impressed with how fast this little creature can go!

Friday April 17 Virtual Field Trip
Today we will visit one more place connected to the theme of space: The MOON! This video gives you a fly over tour of the moon with incredibly clear photos. Did you know the bottom half of the lunar lander from the 1969 moon landing is still hanging out on the surface of the moon?

Thursday April 16 Virtual Field Trip
Today sticks with the theme of space from yesterday's trip to the International Space Station. Check out the Discovery space shuttle and a variety of other aircraft at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.
Discovery (OV-103) was NASA's third space shuttle orbiter to join the fleet, arriving for the first time at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in November 1983. Discovery launched on its final flight to the International Space Station on the STS-133 mission February 24, 2011.
Check it out up close and personal through this site.

Wednesday April 15 Virtual Field Trip
With some unusual times happening in our world, today's virtual field trip is to SPACE to get a different view of planet earth. Scott Kelly is a former NASA astronaut who is best known for spending nearly a year on the International Space Station and for spending 520 days total in space, which puts him on the list of Americans who have spent the most time in space. He is also known for the incredible photo library he created during his time on the ISS. Here is a link to some of them.

Tuesday April 14 Virtual Field Trip
Today's trip is to the White House! For more than 200 years, the White House has been more than just the home of the Presidents and their families. Throughout the world, it is recognized as the symbol of the President, of the President's administration, and of the United States. The White House is the only private residence of a head of state that is open to the public, free of charge.

On this rainy day in NY, I thought a good virtual field trip would be to Washington DC to see the cherry blossoms. The planting of cherry trees originated in 1912 as a gift of friendship to the United States from Japan. In Japan, the flowering cherry tree, or "Sakura," is an exalted flowering plant. The beauty of the cherry blossom is a potent symbol equated with the evanescence of human life.

Today is BLUE day so our virtual field trip is to MoMA to get a close up view of Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." You can zoom in so close you can see the individual brush strokes. Beautiful!
