Recently we’ve gotten some questions about STOPit and how students can make a report. Below are answers to commonly asked questions.
What is STOPit?
STOPit is an anonymous reporting system that allows students to privately share safety concerns with building principals. There are only two people in the entire district who can access these reports: the building principal and the superintendent.
How does a student report something?
To report something, a student can use their phone or computer. They can go to STOPit in their Chromebook's “Helpful Links” folder, in the daily bulletin, or in their email. They can also scan the QR code on any of the posters around the school. Once on the website, a student can choose two options:
Crisis Text Line - Users can text with a trained crisis counselor (day or night) until they feel safe and calm.
Submit a Tip - fill out the form with as much information as possible. The tip is immediately emailed to building principals and STOPit dispatchers. Below is a screenshot of what the tip submission page looks like.
Can building principals follow up on a tip?
Yes - after they submit a tip, they will receive an Incident ID and pass code. They can use this information to enter a “chat” with the building principal. Without providing their name or any identifying information (if they choose), they can message back and forth in real time with the principal who received the tip. Below is a screenshot of the tip submission confirmation.
When can a student use STOPit?
Any time. STOPit has dispatchers available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Building principals will receive tips throughout the school day. When a principal is away from their desk, STOPit dispatchers will take over the responsibility of responding and asking for follow up details.
What can a student report?
A student can report things like abuse, bullying, cyberbullying, inappropriate behavior, an inappropriate incident, suicidal thoughts, a threat or planned attack, unsafe behavior, an unsafe incident, violence, weapons, and more.
Does a student have to log in or give personal information to make a report?
No, it’s totally anonymous. The school has no way of tracking who submits a tip, unless the user puts their name in the tip itself.
What information does STOPit collect?
STOPit may automatically collect information like their IP address, browser details, general location, operating system, etc. It does not collect things like name, email address, phone number, etc.
Can the school see what IP address is submitting tips?
No, only STOPit has that information and the school can not request it.
What if someone makes a threat? How do we find out who it is?
If there is a threat made through STOPit, the dispatchers will share that information with local law enforcement. The police will get a subpoena for the IP address of the person who made the threat and they will follow up with that person. STOPit only shares the IP address with the police after a subpoena, never with the school.
Is it really anonymous?
Yes. The school has no ability to identify the person submitting a report. However, a person can give their name or identifying details at any time if they want.
Who is STOPit for?
Students in Grades 6-12.
Can parents use STOPit?
STOPit is for students. If parents want to make a report, they should contact the building principal. Mr. Reeve at the middle school - reeveb@greenvillecsd.org or Mrs. Goergen at the high school - goergenk@greenvillecsd.org.
Who receives the reports?
Building principals and STOPit dispatchers receive reports during the day and STOPit dispatchers receive the reports at night and on weekends. When Principals get to school the next morning they’ll receive an email with any reports that the dispatchers fielded overnight.
What if something is reported after hours?
STOPit is manned 24/7 by real people. If there is an emergency, STOPit will contact local law enforcement as well as the designated school administrator on their cell phone.
