Scott M. Ellis Elementary School’s PTA hosts a Trunk or Treat every October as a safe, interactive way for the school community to come together and celebrate Halloween. Families from the community take part by decorating cars and giving out candy at the school.
The event is hosted by the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and “offers a safe space for children to have fun” says Jessica Morrison, PTA President. It offers a central location for children to Trick or Treat in a rural community where houses are often spread apart, or on poorly lit roads.
Not only does it provide a safe environment for Halloween festivities, it also allows high school students to obtain volunteer hours. Jessica Morrison adds “Ellis students love seeing the older students at their event.”
The Trunk or Treat is not a fundraiser, and is always free to Ellis families. Each year nearly 500 people attend, and the PTA collects 20,000 pieces of candy to distribute. The community provides candy for this event: businesses make donations towards candy and other expenses, and families drop bags of candy off at the school. “We couldn't do it without the generous support of parents and our local businesses!” says Morrison.
The community has other options for kids who don’t currently attend Greenville, including the Trunk or Treat at GNH Lumber, which takes place on October 31st every year.
Not only do Ellis students get to dress up in costumes and collect candy from decorated cars, they also have a pumpkin contest. Each classroom decorates a pumpkin and attendees vote on the best. This year, Mrs. Guntert’s Spongebob themed pumpkin won the competition.
Kindergarten parent, Stacia Horner, says “It was a well organized event held by the PTA, and a great opportunity for students to see their friends and teachers outside of school.” If you are interested in donating or volunteering for this event next year, please contact the Ellis PTA.
