stopit

In honor of World Mental Health Day, we’re launching STOPit at the middle and high school - an anonymous reporting system that lets students privately share safety concerns with their principals.

While we encourage students to share their concerns directly with trusted adults in our school, we know it’s not always easy. That’s where STOPit comes in.

Students can report things like:

  • Abuse

  • Threats

  • Unsafe Behavior

  • Inappropriate Behavior

  • and more.

One of our District goals this year is to promote a positive learning environment by educating the school community about healthy norms and behaviors around peer relations and anti-bullying/harassment. Launching STOPit at the middle and high school gets us one step closer to reaching that goal.

As they say, if you see something, say something. We hope that STOPit makes the “say something” part a little easier for our students. Below are some answers to common questions about STOPit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can my student report something?
Your student can go to STOPit in the “Helpful Links” tab on their computer, or using the link in the daily bulletin. Click next, and fill out the form with as much information as possible. The tip gets submitted to building principals and STOPit dispatchers. You can do this on a phone or a laptop.

When can STOPit be used?
Any time. STOPit has dispatchers available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

Does my student have to log in or give personal information to make a report?
No, it’s anonymous. However, a student can choose to provide personal information if they would like.

What information does STOPit collect?
STOPit may automatically collect information like the IP address, browser details, general location, operating system, etc. It does not collect things like name, email address, phone number, etc.

Can the school see what IP address is submitting tips?
No, only STOPit has that information and the school can not request it.

What if there’s a threat? How does the school find out who it is?
If there is a threat made through STOPit, the dispatchers will share that information with the school and local law enforcement. The police will get a subpoena for the IP address of the person who made the threat and they will follow up with that person. STOPit only shares the IP address with the police after a subpoena, never directly with the school (even if the school requests it).

Is it really anonymous?
Yes. The school has no ability to identify the person submitting a report. However, a person can give their name or identifying details at any time if they want.

Who is STOPit for?
Students in Grades 6-12.

Can parents use STOPit?
STOPit is for students. If parents wish to make a report, they should contact the building principal.

Who receives the reports?
Building principals and STOPit dispatchers receive reports during the day and STOPit dispatchers receive the reports at night and on weekends.

What if something is reported after hours?
STOPit is manned 24/7 by real people. If there is an emergency, STOPit will contact local law enforcement as well as the designated school administrator on their cell phone.

How was this system paid for?
STOPit was purchased with a grant that Questar III received. It came at no cost to the District.
