Responsibility, Respect and Safety at Scott M. Ellis

Third and fourth grade students at Scott M. Ellis participated in assemblies during the week of October 19th to promote National Bus Safety Week. This year’s theme was “Responsibility, Respect and Safety”. During an interactive presentation Head Bus Driver, Dodie Duncan, reviewed bus policies and expectations while Bus Driver, Andrea Wilson, demonstrated both appropriate and inappropriate school bus behaviors. Before leaving students were reminded that “Responsibility, Respect and Safety” are important on the school bus as well as in the classroom and community.

High School Students Visit Art Omi

High School students in Mr. Stewart’s Photography and Art History classes spent a day at Art Omi in Ghent, NY. Art Omi is a not-for-profit organization providing artistic residency programs for visual artists, writers, musicians and dancers from all over the world. Omi is guided by the vision that creative work is a vehicle for knowledge and understanding regardless of economic, political and cultural boundaries.

While at Omi students studied current exhibits and sculptures to enrich their knowledge and appreciation of contemporary art and sculpture. Students were also able to take pictures of the exhibits to apply techniques they have learned in the classroom such as rules of composition, adjusting shutter speed and determining depth of field concepts.

GCS Students Learn with Colonel the Dog

Colonel the Therapy Dog has been working with students at Scott M. Ellis Elementary School since 2004. Colonel and his owner, Maureen Pulice, are both certified by Therapy Dogs International to work with the public in a variety of ways. Ms. Pulice explains that “Colonel visits anywhere people need happiness”. She wants students to have the opportunity to share experiences with Colonel. Ms. Pulice is a Special Education teacher at Scott M. Ellis and brings Colonel to school every day. Colonel is a reading partner for many students and at least five times a week becomes a “play date” for students who perform well during the week. Colonel has received awards for over 50 visits with the Active Outstanding Working Title and also was acknowledged in 2007 as the Hometown Hero by the American Red Cross.
